The Payson Town Council has unanimously approved the purchase of a used fire department ladder truck for approximately $575,000, a move officials say will significantly strengthen the town's emergency response capabilities, particularly for multi-story structures.

Filling a Critical Gap

Payson Fire Chief previously identified the lack of a ladder truck as a significant gap in the department's capabilities. As the town has grown and multi-story buildings have become more common — including hotels, assisted living facilities, and commercial structures — the need for aerial firefighting equipment has become increasingly urgent.

The used truck, while not new, is in excellent condition and has been well-maintained by its previous owner. Purchasing used equipment allowed the town to acquire this critical capability at a fraction of the cost of a new ladder truck, which can run well over $1 million.

Enhanced Safety for Residents

The ladder truck will enable firefighters to reach upper floors of multi-story buildings for rescue operations and provide elevated water streams for fighting fires from above. It will also be useful for technical rescue operations, such as reaching people in elevated or hard-to-access locations.

Council members expressed strong support for the purchase, noting that public safety is a top priority for the town. The truck is expected to be in service within the coming months following delivery and crew training.

Investing in Public Safety

This purchase is part of a broader effort by the Town of Payson to invest in its emergency services infrastructure. The fire department has been working to modernize its fleet and equipment to keep pace with the town's growth and the evolving needs of the community.
