In a remarkable display of community spirit, volunteers have transformed a rugged hillside near Payson into roughly three miles of directional, world-class mountain bike trail in less than four months. The Ubuntu Trail project, which drew thousands of hours of volunteer labor, is now one of the premier riding destinations in Rim Country.

A Community-Driven Effort

More than 4,000 volunteer hours went into building the Ubuntu Trail, with community members from all walks of life pitching in on weekends and evenings. The project was organized by the Mogollon Sporting Association in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the Town of Payson. Volunteers ranged from experienced trail builders to families who had never picked up a McLeod tool before.

The name "Ubuntu" comes from the Southern African philosophy meaning "I am because we are" — a fitting tribute to the collaborative nature of the project. The trail was designed by professional trail builders and incorporates sustainable building techniques that minimize erosion and environmental impact while maximizing the riding experience.

World-Class Design

The trail features a variety of terrain challenges suited for intermediate to advanced riders, including flowing berms, rock gardens, and technical switchbacks that take advantage of the natural topography. The directional design — riders go one way — improves safety and allows for a more creative trail layout.

With its completion, the Ubuntu Trail adds to Payson's growing reputation as a mountain biking destination. Combined with existing trails in the area, riders now have access to an extensive network of singletrack beneath the Mogollon Rim.

What's Next

Organizers are already planning Phase 2 of the trail system, which would add additional miles and connect to existing Forest Service trails in the area. The success of the Ubuntu Trail has energized the community and demonstrated what can be accomplished when residents work together toward a shared goal.
